The Basics

To join any Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) tuition course you need to have held a valid and full UK/EU driving licence for at least three and a half years, be over the age of 21 and able to read a number plate from 27.5m (90ft).

You will also need a commitment to learning and a desire to work with others, as being a driving instructor is very much a people job. That means keeping calm, maintaining authority and generating trust.

Driving Instructors Course Exams

The ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) exams are in three parts:

Part One - Computer-based Theory and Hazard Perception Tests
Part Two - Practical Driving Test
Part Three - Practical Test of Teaching Ability

You must pass each part of the driving instructor training course before you can take the exam for the next part. Qualification must be completed within two years of passing the first part.

Our Approved Driving Instructor Training Course

The Steve's School of Motoring Approved Driving Instructor tuition course has been specially prepared by our experienced driving instructor trainers and our driving instructor training support team and comes in an easy-to-follow format.

The training consists of personal training, home-based learning and on-the-road practical lessons. This combination will give you the skills and knowledge needed to pass the exams. You'll go at your own pace so the training can fit in with your lifestyle, around your current job and your family commitments. As a rule, the course should take between 6 and 9 months however, we have a few ways to speed this up for you if you wish. You can study parts one and two together to speed up the process. You can also be out working after passing the Part Two (driving ability) exam and after you have completed the relevant amount of Part Three (teaching ability) training.

Driving Instructor Support

You'll get support throughout from your assigned driving instructor trainer and our training support team (based in our shop). You will also be able to use our training vehicle to practice for the driving and teaching ability exams.

Options for Driving Instructors

For your convenience we offer two tracks that you can take. The first is the 'Fixed Pay Track' which is designed for people who would like to pay for the course in regular instalments and the second is the 'Pay As You Go Track' which is designed for people to pay for each lesson separately throughout the course.

And After You’ve Passed…

Once you have passed your driving ability exam and have had the required Part Three (teaching ability) training, we will guarantee you the option of joining one of the Steve's School of Motoring driving instructor franchise schemes
